Winback / Win-back email

Win-back email for cancelled subscribers: what to send, with examples

For subscription apps and SaaS on RevenueCat or Stripe

Short answer. Send each lost subscriber one short, personal message based on why they left and what they used: a card problem gets a fix link, a cancel gets the one reason to come back, an expired trial gets the thing they never reached. Add an offer only inside limits you set, and give one link. Winback HQ does this for you: it reads your RevenueCat or Stripe events, writes one personal message per lapsed subscriber, attaches an offer only within your limits (for App Store subscribers on iOS 18 and later, an Apple win-back offer link), and reports who came back. No monthly fee: 15% of the revenue from each returning subscriber for their first 6 months back, and nothing if nobody returns.

Three examples, one per reason they left

1

Billing failed

"Hi Sam, your card did not go through, so your plan paused on Monday. Your 14 saved workouts are still there. Update the card here and you are back where you left off."

2

Cancelled

"Hi Priya, you cancelled after the export kept timing out. That was fixed in the 3.2 update. If you want to try again, here is a month at half price."

3

Trial ended unpaid

"Hi Leo, your trial ended before you set up your first project. It takes two minutes. Here is a link that drops you straight into it."

What every good win-back email has

  • Their name and what they did, not "valued customer".
  • The reason they left, answered: a fix, a change, or the step they missed.
  • An offer only if it fits your limits: a max discount, a max length, and only for people who opted in.
  • One link back to the plan, the card update, or the Apple offer.
  • The right moment: days after a billing failure, after the lapse for a cancel, soon after a trial ends.
What should a win-back email to a cancelled subscriber say?

Name what they used, give the one change or reason to come back, add an offer only if your limits allow it, and give one link. Keep it short and personal. One message per person beats a blast.

When should I send a win-back email?

A billing failure is best answered within days. A voluntary cancel usually gets a message after a short wait, once the subscription has lapsed. An expired trial is best reached soon after the trial ends.

Can I win back App Store subscribers by email?

Yes, if they gave you an email and opted in. For iOS 18 and later, the message can carry an Apple win-back offer link so they resubscribe in the App Store.

What does Winback HQ cost?

No monthly fee. Winback HQ charges 15% of the revenue from each subscriber who comes back after a Winback message, for their first 6 months back. If nobody returns, you pay nothing. The planner is free.

Plan a campaign for free first: the Winback planner runs in your browser on a RevenueCat or Stripe export, with no account and no card.
