# Winback Winback reads a subscription app's RevenueCat or Stripe events (cancellations, expired trials that never converted, billing issues), writes each lost subscriber one personal message based on what they actually did in the app, attaches an offer only within limits the founder sets, and reports who came back. Founders can plan a win-back campaign in the browser at https://winbackhq.com/planner/ from a RevenueCat or Stripe export (files never leave the browser). Pricing during early access: no monthly fee, 15% of revenue from subscribers Winback brings back, for six months. Winback is built by AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421, Nigeria), which runs it on its own subscription app, AGUNA. --- # Use Winback from an AI agent URL: https://winbackhq.com/agents/ Updated: 2026-10-17 Winback / For AI agents # Use Winback from an AI agent Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 3 min read Winback runs a public, read-only MCP server at https://winbackhq.com/mcp/. Your server must answer Apple's request within 700 ms or Apple shows its default screen. It works on iOS 15.1 and later, developers must apply and be approved, and messages are labelled "From the developer". ## What is Apple's Retention Messaging API? Until now, the iOS cancel screen belonged to Apple. A subscriber could open Settings, tap cancel and leave without your app ever knowing why. Retention Messaging gives you one chance to speak at that moment. At WWDC on 11 June 2026, Apple announced that developers can show a message, imagery and an optional offer when a subscriber chooses to cancel, set up either in App Store Connect or through a Retention Messaging API. MacRumors reported it as available "this fall" (MacRumors, 11 Jun 2026). Check App Store Connect to see whether it is live for your account. ## The technical facts | | Item | What applies | Source | What you can show | A message, imagery, and an optional offer | MacRumors | How you set it | App Store Connect, or the Retention Messaging API | MacRumors | Response time | Your server must respond within 700 ms, or Apple shows the default | Superwall, 8 May 2026 | Platforms | iOS 15.1+, iPadOS 15.1+, visionOS 1+, macOS 14+ | Superwall | Access | You must apply and be approved | Superwall | Label | Messages appear as "From the developer" | Superwall Checked 17 Oct 2026. Two details are easy to miss. The label "From the developer" tells the user the words come from you, not Apple, so write like a person, not like a system notice. And approval is a separate step from building the endpoint, so apply early. The 700 ms rule is the part to plan around. Apple calls your server while the person is looking at the screen. If your server is slow, cold or down, Apple simply shows its own screen and you lose the moment. That means the decision about what to show has to be made in advance and served from something fast, not worked out live by a slow database query. ## What can you show? The three building blocks | | Block | Good use | Avoid | Message | One sentence that names something the person actually used, and what they lose by leaving | Guilt, or a list of every feature | Imagery | A real screen from your app, ideally the one they used most | Stock photos or a big logo | Optional offer | A discount or switch to a cheaper plan, for people you would genuinely keep | The same discount for everyone, which trains people to cancel for a deal | Nothing (default) | When you have nothing useful to say | Showing a weak message just because you can The "good use" and "avoid" columns are our advice, not Apple rules. ## How it fits with win-back after the cancel Retention Messaging and win-back are two halves of the same job: - At the cancel screen, Retention Messaging tries to stop the cancel. You get one screen, under 700 ms, with no idea yet why they are leaving. - After the cancel, the person still has access until the end of the period. RevenueCat reports this as a CANCELLATION event. This is when a personal message can ask what went wrong. - After access ends, an Apple win-back offer can bring them back at a lower price, if they meet your eligibility rules. Some people will cancel anyway, whatever you show them, and that is fine. What matters is that the cancel is not the end of the conversation. The data on who comes back later is on our churn statistics page: monthly subscribers reactivate at about 20% within a year, annual subscribers at 5% (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). ## Tools that support it today Superwall has published support for Apple Retention Messaging alongside its paywalls (Superwall blog). If you already use Superwall, start there. Winback does not answer Retention Messaging calls today. It works after the cancel: it reads the cancellation from RevenueCat or Stripe, writes one personal message per person, and includes your offer only within the limits you set. We may add Retention Messaging later; we will not claim it until it works. ## Getting ready, a short checklist - Apply for access through Apple and wait for approval. - Decide who gets an offer at cancel and who gets a plain message. Write it down as rules. - Pre-compute the answer for each subscriber so your endpoint only looks it up. - Host the endpoint somewhere that stays warm and answers well under 700 ms. - Log every call and what you showed, so you can compare who cancelled anyway. - Plan the follow-up for people who still cancel. See RevenueCat win-back. ## FAQ What happens if my server is slower than 700 ms? Apple shows its default cancel screen instead of your message. Nothing breaks for the user, but you lose the chance to speak. Serve a pre-computed answer from a fast endpoint. Which iOS versions show Retention Messaging? Superwall lists iOS 15.1 and later, iPadOS 15.1 and later, visionOS 1 and later, and macOS 14 and later. Check Apple's documentation for any change. Do I need Apple's approval? Yes. Developers must apply and be approved before using Retention Messaging, according to Superwall's write-up from 8 May 2026. Does Winback support Retention Messaging? Not today. Winback works after the cancel, using the cancellation event from RevenueCat or Stripe. If you need a cancel-screen message now, Superwall supports it. Who is behind Winback? AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421) in Abuja, Nigeria. We run Winback on our own App Store app, AGUNA, first. Winback is new and has no customer results yet. ## See who you could win back this month Upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export to the planner. Apple introduced them at WWDC 2024; they need iOS 18 or later and StoreKit 2. You decide who qualifies using three rules: how long they paid, how long ago they lapsed, and how long they must wait between redemptions. Apple then shows the offer on the App Store, in your app, in Settings, and through a unique URL you can share. ## Requirements at a glance | | Item | What applies | Source | Introduced | WWDC 2024 | RevenueCat guide | Customer OS | iOS 18 or later | RevenueCat guide | Your app | StoreKit 2 | RevenueCat guide | Who qualifies | Rules you set on paid duration, time since lapse, and wait between redemptions | RevenueCat guide | Where people see it | App Store, in your app, Settings subscriptions, and a unique URL | RevenueCat guide Checked 17 Oct 2026. Apple changes these screens often; check App Store Connect and Apple's documentation before you ship. ## What are Apple win-back offers and how do I set one up? A win-back offer is attached to a subscription product, the same way an introductory offer is. The difference is who sees it. Introductory offers are for people who have never subscribed. Win-back offers are for people who did subscribe, then left. The useful part is that Apple does some of the distribution for you. A lapsed subscriber on iOS 18 can come across the offer on your App Store page or in their subscription settings without you sending anything. That is reach you do not have to pay for. ### The three eligibility rules - Paid duration. How long the person must have paid before. Use this to keep the offer for people who stayed long enough to know the app. - Time since lapse. How long ago their subscription ended. Use this to target recent leavers, or to wait a while before discounting. - Wait between redemptions. How long before the same person can use a win-back offer again. Use this to stop people cycling through cancel and discount. Those three rules are the whole targeting model. You cannot target by what someone did in the app, by why they left, or by country beyond normal pricing. Everyone who meets the rules sees the same offer. ### Setting one up, step by step - Move purchase code to StoreKit 2. Win-back offers depend on it. If you use RevenueCat, check that your SDK version supports them. - Pick the subscription. In App Store Connect, open the subscription the offer should apply to. - Create the win-back offer. Set the price or free period and how long the offer lasts. - Set the three eligibility rules. Start strict: a minimum paid duration, a window after lapse, and a long wait between redemptions. You can loosen later. - Handle it in the app. Make sure your paywall can show the offer when StoreKit reports the user is eligible. - Copy the offer URL. Keep it. This is the link you will put in your own messages. For screenshots of the current App Store Connect screens, see RevenueCat's guide to Apple win-back offers. ## Where win-back offers fall short Apple's offer is good at one job: showing a price to someone who comes back on their own. It does not reach out. Here is who it misses: | | Who | Why Apple's offer misses them | What still works | People who never open the App Store or Settings again | The offer waits to be found | A message from you with the offer URL | People on iOS 17 or earlier | The feature needs iOS 18 or later | A message with a web checkout code | People outside your rules, for example a free trial that never converted | Eligibility counts paid duration, so check whether your rules can include them at all | A message with a different offer, or none | Android and web subscribers | Apple offers apply only to App Store subscriptions | Google Play offers or a Stripe coupon | People who left for a reason a discount will not fix | Everyone gets the same offer | A personal message that asks what went wrong The offer URL does not get around eligibility. If someone outside your rules taps it, they will not get the offer. So when Winback writes a message, it only includes your Apple offer URL for people your rules cover, and gives everyone else either a different offer you approved or no offer. ## When should I send a win-back offer? RevenueCat's 2026 data gives some timing clues. Month 1 accounts for 35% of annual plan cancellations, and month 12 brings a spike of 9% to 14% (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). Monthly subscribers come back far more often than annual ones: 20% against 5% within a year (same source). | | Plan | Reactivate within a year | Suggested approach | Monthly | 20% | Message soon after access ends; a light offer is often enough | Annual | 5% | Message near renewal; offer a monthly plan or a smaller first payment Reactivation numbers: RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2, checked 17 Oct 2026. The suggested approach is our judgement, not a benchmark. ## How Winback uses your offer Winback does not create offers in App Store Connect and does not connect to Apple. You create the offer and give us the URL and your rules. When a subscriber lapses, Winback checks your rules, and if the person qualifies, puts the URL into a short personal message. If not, it uses the fallback you set. You read the first batch before anything goes out. See the RevenueCat integration and Apple Retention Messaging, which works earlier, at the moment of cancel. ## FAQ Do Apple win-back offers need iOS 18? Yes. Win-back offers need iOS 18 or later on the customer's device and StoreKit 2 in your app. People on older versions will not see them. Can I give a win-back offer to someone whose free trial expired? Eligibility is based on paid duration, time since lapse and wait between redemptions. Someone who never paid may not fit your paid-duration rule. Check your rules in App Store Connect, and plan a separate approach for expired trials. Can I send the win-back offer link by email? Yes. Each offer has a unique URL. You can put it in an email, a push message or a web page. The person still has to meet your eligibility rules to redeem it. Does Winback create Apple offers for me? No. You create offers in App Store Connect. Winback includes the offer URL in messages to people your rules cover, and gives everyone else the fallback you choose. Who is behind Winback? "Not stated" means the page we checked did not mention App Store or RevenueCat support; ask the vendor if you need it. Vendor numbers are vendor claims. Prices change, so check each site before you buy. ## Why App Store apps are a different case Most tools on this list were built for web billing. On Stripe, the cancel button is on your own site and failed cards are a large part of churn, so cancel flows and dunning carry most of the weight. Stripe itself says its users recover 55% of failed payments on average (Stripe Billing, vendor claim). App Store subscriptions work differently. The cancel happens in Apple's settings, where a web cancel flow never sees it. And billing failures are a smaller share: RevenueCat found 14% of App Store cancellations are involuntary billing failures, against 31% on Google Play (RevenueCat State of Subscription Apps 2026). Most App Store churn is a choice, so what matters is reaching people after they leave. Some do come back: 20% of monthly subscribers and 5% of annual subscribers reactivate within a year (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). ## Is there churn software that only charges when it recovers revenue? Yes, several, but "pay on success" means different things in each: | | Tool | What you pay | When you start paying | Source, checked on | FlyCode | A fee based only on recovered revenue above a baseline | When recovery beats the baseline | flycode.com, 17 Oct 2026 | Churn Solution | "Pay As We Save" share, or 0.03% to 0.1% of MRR | Depends on the option you pick | GetApp listing, 17 Oct 2026 | WinbackFlow | Flat $99, $299 or $699 a month by MRR | After its first recovery, per its own wording | winbackflow.co, 17 Oct 2026 | Winback | 15% of revenue from subscribers who come back | Only when someone returns, for 6 months per returner | Winback pricing, 17 Oct 2026 FlyCode's own comparison article also describes Butter Payments as pay on recovery. We did not check that on Butter's site. ## How to choose ### You bill on the web through Stripe - Turn on Stripe's own recovery first. You already pay for it. - If most cancels happen on your own cancel page, a cancel flow tool such as Churnkey or Churn Buster can act before people leave. Winback does not do cancel flows. - If you would rather pay on results: FlyCode suits larger brands, Churn Solution covers Stripe consumer subscriptions from $5K to $5M MRR, and WinbackFlow starts its flat fee after a first recovery. ### Your app sells through the App Store and RevenueCat - Set up Apple's own tools first: win-back offers for lapsed subscribers and Retention Messaging at the moment of cancel. - If you sell on RevenueCat Web and one English email is enough, RevenueCat's web win-back beta is the cheapest option. See RevenueCat win-back for what it covers. - Recurflux and Winback both work with RevenueCat. Recurflux sends dunning and win-back emails; Winback writes one personal message per lapsed subscriber and charges only when someone returns. Both are new. Compare them side by side. - Superwall fits if you want paywall testing and Retention Messaging in one place. ### Small business or large A flat fee is predictable, but it costs the same in a slow month. A share of revenue costs nothing when nobody returns, and more when many do. Illustration, not a benchmark: on a $9.99 monthly plan, 15% is about $1.50 a month per returning subscriber, for 6 months. Churnkey's Starter plan is $250 a month billed yearly. At that price, a percentage fee costs less until roughly 167 returners are paying at the same time. Run your own numbers before you decide. ## Where Winback fits, honestly Winback is new. We are onboarding the first apps by hand and have no customer results to show yet. We run it on our own App Store app, AGUNA, first. It has no cancel flows, which Churnkey and Churn Buster offer. It does have a public, read-only MCP server that AI agents can query for pricing, fit and a win-back estimate. What it does have: RevenueCat and Stripe support, a personal message per person within limits you set, a planner you can use free in your browser, and no fee unless someone comes back. See Winback vs Churnkey for a closer comparison. Winback is not WinbackFlow, WinbackEngine or Winback Labs. Those are separate companies with similar names. ## How we made this list We read each vendor's own pricing and product pages on 17 Oct 2026 and wrote down what they say, not what we guess. Where a page did not mention App Store or RevenueCat support, we wrote "Not stated". Winback is our product, so we listed what it does not do as well. If something here is wrong or out of date, email support@winbackhq.com and we will fix it. ## FAQ Is there churn software that only charges when it recovers revenue? Yes. FlyCode charges only on recovered revenue above a baseline. Churn Solution offers a Pay As We Save share. WinbackFlow says you pay nothing until its first recovery, then a flat fee. Winback charges 15% of revenue from subscribers who come back, for 6 months, and nothing else. Which churn recovery tools work with RevenueCat and the App Store? On the pages we checked on 17 Oct 2026: RevenueCat itself, Recurflux and Winback work with RevenueCat, and Superwall supports Apple Retention Messaging. Churnkey, Churn Buster, FlyCode, WinbackFlow and Churn Solution did not state App Store or RevenueCat support. Does RevenueCat have win-back campaigns? Yes, in beta. They email a Claim offer link when a subscription expires, and need RevenueCat Web with RevenueCat Billing, Stripe Billing or Paddle. The beta is English only, with no email customization and no audience targeting. Why does this list not name a winner? Because the right tool depends on where you bill and how big you are. A Stripe SaaS with a web cancel page needs different things from an App Store app. Winback is our product and is on this list, so we show the facts and let you choose. Who is behind Winback? Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 5 min read Churnkey is a mature retention suite with cancel flows, payment recovery and return campaigns for web billing systems like Stripe, Chargebee and Paddle, priced from $250 a month on a yearly plan. Winback is a new, narrower tool: it messages subscribers after they leave, works with RevenueCat apps on the App Store and Google Play as well as Stripe, and has no monthly fee, only 15% of revenue from people who come back. Pick Churnkey for web cancel flows at volume; consider Winback for a small app business that wants to pay only on results. ## The short version Churnkey has been doing this for years. Winback has not. Churnkey has cancel flows, an MCP server and a long list of billing integrations. Winback has none of those. What Winback has is a different shape: it starts after the cancel, it reads RevenueCat events so it covers store-billed apps, and you pay nothing unless someone returns. ## Side by side | | | Churnkey | Winback | Pricing basis | Flat monthly fee by tier | No monthly fee. 15% of revenue from returners, for 6 months | Entry price | Starter $250/mo billed yearly, or $300 monthly | $0 until someone comes back | Higher tiers | Core from $500/$600; Intelligence from $625/$750; Enterprise custom | None | Billing systems | Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle, Braintree, Recurly, Maxio | RevenueCat (App Store, Google Play, web) and Stripe | App Store and RevenueCat | Not confirmed on its consumer-app page | Yes, through RevenueCat webhooks | Cancel flows | Yes | No | Payment recovery | Yes; claims up to 89% (vendor claim) | Messages after the store or Stripe has finished retrying | Win-back after cancel | Yes, return campaigns | Yes, one personal message per person within your offer limits | MCP server | Yes | No | Track record | Established product | New, in early access, no customer results yet Churnkey details from churnkey.co and its consumer-app page, checked 17 Oct 2026. Winback pricing on the pricing page. ## When Churnkey is the better pick - You bill on the web through Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle, Braintree, Recurly or Maxio, and most cancels happen on your own cancel page. A cancel flow there can save people before they go, which Winback does not do. - You have the volume to make a flat fee cheap per saved customer. - You have a retention person who will run experiments in the tool every week. - You want an MCP server so an AI agent can query your retention data. ## When Winback may fit better - Your subscriptions are mostly on the App Store or Google Play through RevenueCat. Store billing means the cancel happens in Apple's or Google's settings, not on your page, so a web cancel flow never sees it. - You are small, and a fixed monthly fee would cost more than you recover in a slow month. - You want each lost subscriber to get a message about what they actually did, not one template. - You want to try it with no risk: if nobody comes back, you pay nothing. ## What are the best Churnkey alternatives? It depends on where you bill and how you want to pay. Here is the wider field, as each tool describes its own pricing: | | Tool | Best for | Pricing basis | Source | RevenueCat web win-back | RevenueCat apps already selling on the web | Part of RevenueCat; free up to $2,500 monthly tracked revenue, then 1%. A sensible split for a business that bills on both web and stores: - Keep Churnkey's cancel flow on your web cancel page, if it is saving people. - Point Winback at RevenueCat for App Store and Google Play subscribers, which a web cancel flow cannot see. - Make sure the two tools never email the same person. We set exclusions with you during setup. - Compare after 60 days: returns counted by each tool, and what each cost. Related: Stripe churn recovery, RevenueCat win-back, integrations. ## FAQ How much does Churnkey cost? Churnkey lists Starter at $250 a month billed yearly or $300 monthly, Core from $500 or $600, Intelligence from $625 or $750, and custom Enterprise pricing, as checked on churnkey.co on 17 Oct 2026. Does Churnkey work with the App Store or RevenueCat? Churnkey's consumer-app page names Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle, Braintree, Recurly and Maxio. It did not confirm App Store or RevenueCat support when we checked on 17 Oct 2026. Ask Churnkey directly if you need it. Is Winback cheaper than Churnkey? If few people come back, yes, because you pay nothing. If many come back at a high price, 15% for 6 months can cost more than a flat fee. Use the revenue calculator with your own numbers. Does Winback have cancel flows? No. Winback starts after the cancel. If you want to stop cancels on a web page, a cancel flow tool such as Churnkey or Churn Buster does that. Who is behind Winback? AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421) in Abuja, Nigeria. We run Winback on our own subscription app, AGUNA, first. It is new and has no customer results yet. ## See who you could win back this month Upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export to the planner. So an expired-trial user often barely used your app. Win them back with one short, personal message about the one thing they tried, sent through a channel you actually have (email, push or an in-app message), and add an offer only for people your rules say deserve one. ## The data: trials end early | | Trial length | Trial cancels on Day 0 | Median trial-to-paid | Source | 4 days or less (3-day trials for Day 0) | 55.4% | 25.5% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 | 5 to 9 days (7-day trials for Day 0) | 39.8% | 37.4% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 | 14-day trials | 35.7% | not split out | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 | 17 to 32 days (30-day trials for Day 0) | 31.1% | 42.5% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 Checked 17 Oct 2026. Day 0 shares are for 3, 7, 14 and 30-day trials; trial-to-paid medians are for the length bands shown. 84% of 3-day trial cancellations happen between Day 0 and Day 1 (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). Read that table again. Over half of people on a 3-day trial who cancel do so on the day they start. Some people turn off auto-renew straight after starting a trial so they will not be charged, and keep using the app until the trial ends. So a cancel on Day 0 is not always a verdict on your app. Sometimes it is just caution. That changes how you write to them. A person who cancelled on Day 0 and opened the app twice needs a reminder of what they started. A person who used it every day for a week and still did not pay needs a different message, maybe about price. ## How do I message users who cancelled on the App Store if I never collected their email? This is the real problem for most iOS apps. Apple does not give you the email of someone who subscribed through the App Store. Here is what you can actually use: | | Channel | Needs | Reach after trial ends | Email | An address you collected yourself, for example at sign-up | Good if you have it | Push notification | Push permission granted during the trial | Limited lost if they deleted the app | In-app message | The person opens the app again | Limited only reaches people who come back on their own | Apple win-back offer | iOS 18+, StoreKit 2, and the person meets your eligibility rules | Check rules include paid duration | Web checkout link | Any channel above to deliver it | Good as an add-on Apple win-back offer requirements from RevenueCat's guide, checked 17 Oct 2026. The reach column is our judgement. Apple win-back offers set eligibility partly by how long someone paid (RevenueCat guide). A person who only ever had a free trial may not fit a paid-duration rule, so check your rules before you plan around Apple's offer for this group. See Apple win-back offers. If you have none of these, the fix is upstream: ask for an email during onboarding, with a clear reason, and ask for push permission at a moment when it makes sense. ## What to offer, and to whom Discounting every expired trial teaches people that the trial is a step towards a discount. Set rules instead. Some starting points, all yours to change: - Barely used the app. No offer. A reminder of the one thing they did, and a link back. - Used it often, did not pay. Price may be the problem. A cheaper plan or a first-month discount, within your largest allowed discount. - Started, got stuck. Help, not money. Point to the step they never finished. - Already had one offer. No second offer inside your wait period. Winback applies those limits before writing anything. If a person falls outside them, they get a message with no offer, or no message. ## Example messages Examples only. Real messages use what each person did in your app. Barely used, no offer ### Subject: your first plan is still there Hi Sam, you built a 3-day plan on Monday and then life happened. It is still saved. Want to try day 1 this week? Reply if something put you off, I read every reply. Used often, small offer ### Subject: 8 workouts in 7 days Hi Ade, you did 8 workouts during your trial. If the price was the issue, here is 30% off your first month with code ADE-4F7Q. It is only for you and lasts 7 days. The code in the second example is a made-up return code. Each real one belongs to one person, so the return can be counted fairly. See how returns are counted. ## Timing Send the first message soon after the trial ends, while they still remember the app. One follow-up at most. After that, stop. If they come back on their own later, that is not ours to count; Winback only counts a return that uses the person's return code, or the same customer id subscribing again within 60 days of the message. ## Using RevenueCat or Stripe events In RevenueCat, a trial that ends without a purchase arrives as an EXPIRATION event with period type TRIAL. In Stripe, it depends on your trial settings; the subscription is usually deleted or paused. Winback reads either and puts the person in the trial-expired segment. Details: RevenueCat, Stripe. You can see your own trial-expired list today in the planner: upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export, and it sorts everyone into cancelled, billing failed and trial never converted, without uploading anything. ## FAQ When do most free trial cancellations happen? On the first day. RevenueCat's 2026 data shows 55.4% of 3-day trial cancellations happen on Day 0 and 84% between Day 0 and Day 1. Longer trials spread cancels out more: 31.1% on Day 0 for 30-day trials. Should I give everyone with an expired trial a discount? No. Many barely used the app, and a discount will not fix that. Save offers for people who used the app often but did not pay, and set a wait period so nobody gets two. Can I send a RevenueCat expired trial email? Yes, if you stored an email as a subscriber attribute. RevenueCat sends an EXPIRATION event when a trial lapses. Winback reads it and writes one message per person. RevenueCat's own web win-back campaigns are beta and need RevenueCat Web. Which trial length converts best? In RevenueCat's 2026 data, trials of 17 to 32 days had the highest median trial-to-paid rate at 42.5%, against 37.4% for 5 to 9 days and 25.5% for 4 days or less. Who is behind Winback? Involuntary churn is churn caused by a failed payment rather than a choice to leave. This glossary defines these and the other terms subscription founders meet when they try to win people back, in plain words, with sources. ## Quick reference | | Term | Applies to | Handles | Voluntary churn | All | People who chose to leave | Involuntary churn | All | Failed payments | Billing retry | App Store, Google Play, Stripe | Failed payments | Billing grace period | App Store, Google Play | Failed payments | Win-back offer | App Store, iOS 18+ | Lapsed subscribers | Retention message | App Store | People about to cancel | Dunning | Web billing | Failed payments | Smart Retries | Stripe | Failed payments | Card updater | Card payments | Preventing failures | Reactivation rate | All | Measuring returns | Recovered revenue | All | Measuring returns | Pay-on-success | Pricing | Paying for results | Return code | Winback | Counting returns | Expired trial | All | Trials that never converted ## Definitions ### Voluntary churn A subscriber leaves because they chose to: they turned off auto-renew or cancelled. The fix is a reason to come back, not a new card. In Recurly's July 2026 network data, average voluntary churn was 2.34% (Recurly, vendor). See RevenueCat win-back. ### Involuntary churn A subscription ends because a payment failed, not because the person chose to leave. Expired cards and bank declines are common causes. RevenueCat's 2026 report puts it at 31% of Google Play cancellations and 14% on the App Store (RevenueCat SOSA 2026). ### Billing retry After a renewal payment fails, the store or payment processor tries again on a schedule. On the App Store, billing retry lasts up to 60 days (Apple). On Stripe, Smart Retries choose the retry times. Do not message about a failed payment while retries are still running. ### Billing grace period Extra days of access a subscriber keeps while the store retries a failed payment. On the App Store you can choose 3 or 6 days for weekly plans, and 3, 16 or 28 days for monthly and longer plans (Apple). ### Win-back offer (Apple) A discounted or free period for lapsed App Store subscribers, introduced at WWDC 2024, needing iOS 18+ and StoreKit 2. You set eligibility by paid duration, time since lapse and wait between redemptions (RevenueCat guide). See Apple win-back offers. ### Retention message (Apple) Your own message, image and optional offer shown on the iOS cancel screen. Your server must reply within 700 ms or Apple shows its default, and developers must be approved (Superwall). See Apple Retention Messaging. ### Dunning The process of chasing a failed payment: retries, reminder emails, and a link to update the card. Good dunning is polite and fast, and stops the moment the payment works. It handles involuntary churn only. ### Smart Retries Stripe Billing's automatic retry feature, which chooses when to retry a failed renewal. It is included with Stripe Billing. Stripe says businesses using Stripe recover 55% of failed payments on average (Stripe, vendor). ### Card updater A service that gets a customer's new card details from the card network when their bank reissues a card, so the next renewal does not fail. Stripe Billing includes automatic card updates. It prevents failures rather than recovering them. ### Reactivation rate The share of churned subscribers who subscribe again within a set time, usually one year. RevenueCat reports 20.1% for monthly app subscribers and 5% for annual in 2026 (RevenueCat, SOSA part 2). It includes people who return with no campaign. ### Recovered revenue Revenue from subscribers who came back after leaving. For pay-on-success pricing it must be defined exactly: who counts, over what window, and whether refunds are removed. Winback counts revenue from returners for 6 months from their return. ### Pay-on-success A pricing model where the tool charges only when it produces a result, here a returning subscriber. Winback charges 15% of returners' revenue for 6 months, with no monthly fee. Details on the pricing page. ### Return code A unique code in each Winback message that belongs to one person. When it is used, the return is counted. Without a code, a return counts if the same customer id subscribes again within 60 days of the message. This is Winback's own term. ### Expired trial A free trial that ended without a paid purchase. In RevenueCat's 2026 data, 55.4% of 3-day trial cancellations happen on Day 0 (RevenueCat SOSA 2026). See expired trial win-back. Numbers behind these definitions are collected on the churn statistics page. ## FAQ What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary churn? Voluntary churn is a subscriber choosing to leave. Involuntary churn is a subscription ending because a payment failed. They need different fixes: a reason to return for the first, a working card for the second. What is a good reactivation rate? For subscription apps, RevenueCat's 2026 benchmark is 20.1% within a year for monthly plans and 5% for annual. Productivity apps reach 36.1% on monthly plans; mid-priced health and fitness apps about 12%. Is dunning the same as win-back? No. Dunning chases failed payments from people who did not choose to leave. Win-back reaches people who did leave, or whose trial ended, and gives them a reason to return. How long does Apple retry a failed subscription payment? Up to 60 days. You can also switch on a grace period so the subscriber keeps access while Apple retries: 3 or 6 days for weekly plans, 3, 16 or 28 days for monthly and longer. Who wrote this glossary? Most apps send one "we miss you" coupon to everyone, or nothing. But a person whose card expired, a person who left after six weeks and a person who never started need different notes. Cancelled ### They chose to leave Often after real use. A note about their own progress lands differently from a coupon. An offer, if any, stays inside your cap. Card failed ### They did not mean to leave An expired or declined card ended a subscription they still wanted. They get a one-tap fix link, not a discount. Winback finds the subscribers your app lost this month, sorted into three groups: people who cancelled, people whose card failed, and free trials that ended without paying. It writes each person one short, personal message based on what they did in your app, attaches an offer only inside limits you set, and shows you 30 days later who came back. Which billing tools does it work with? RevenueCat for iOS and Android apps, and Stripe Billing for web subscriptions. The in-browser planner works from a Stripe subscriptions export or a RevenueCat export. In early access we also connect your RevenueCat or Stripe webhook by hand. How much does it cost? No monthly fee. During early access Winback costs 15% of the revenue from subscribers who come back after a Winback message, for their first 6 months back. If nobody comes back, you pay nothing. The in-browser planner is free. How do you know someone came back because of Winback? Each message carries a unique return code, and a return also counts when the same customer resubscribes within 60 days of their message. The planner's second step shows the list, person by person, so you can check every one. Can it give away discounts I do not want to give? No. You set the maximum offer per group, a total budget cap and who can be messaged. Card failures get a fix-your-card message with no discount by default. Every message is a draft you can edit before anything sends. Is it allowed by Apple and Google? Yes. For in-app subscriptions Winback uses the stores' own tools, such as Apple's win-back offers, and only messages people who agreed to hear from your app. It never asks people to pay outside the store where the store requires its own billing. Who is behind Winback? Winback is built by AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421) in Abuja, Nigeria. We run it on our own subscription app, AGUNA, first. It is new, and we are onboarding the first apps by hand. Rows marked "Our guidance" describe how the channel works in your own app; they make no claim about results. ## Start with what Apple shows for you ### Apple win-back offers A win-back offer is a discount or free period for people whose subscription lapsed. Apple introduced it at WWDC 2024. It needs iOS 18 or later and StoreKit 2. You set three rules: how long they paid, how long ago they lapsed, and how long they must wait between redemptions (RevenueCat guide to Apple win-back offers). This is the one channel that needs nothing from you once it is live. Apple shows the offer on your App Store page and in the person's subscription settings. It also gives you a unique URL, which you can put in any push, in-app or web message. The URL does not get around your rules: someone outside them will not get the offer. Full setup steps are in our Apple win-back offers guide. ### Retention Messaging, at the moment of cancel At WWDC on 11 Jun 2026, Apple announced Retention Messaging: when a subscriber chooses to cancel, you can show a message, imagery and an optional offer, set up in App Store Connect or through a Retention Messaging API. Apple said it would be available "this fall" (MacRumors). For the API, your server must answer within 700 ms or Apple shows its default screen. It covers iOS 15.1+, iPadOS 15.1+, visionOS 1+ and macOS 14+, developers must apply and be approved, and messages carry a "From the developer" label (Superwall, 8 May 2026). It is your last word before they go, and it needs no email. See Apple Retention Messaging for more. ### Billing problems: fix them in the app Some lapsed subscribers did not choose to leave. Their card failed. Apple keeps retrying for up to 60 days, and you can offer a grace period of 3 or 6 days on weekly plans, or 3, 16 or 28 days on monthly and longer plans. Apple gives a deep link straight to payment settings: https://apps.apple.com/account/billing (Apple, reducing involuntary subscriber churn). If someone in billing retry opens your app, show a short banner with that link. On the App Store this is a smaller group: RevenueCat found 14% of App Store cancellations are involuntary billing failures (State of Subscription Apps 2026). ## Then the channels you own ### Push notifications If a lapsed subscriber still has the app and allowed notifications, push is the most direct line you have. Send one message, not a series. Say what changed in the app or what they left unfinished, and include your win-back offer URL if they qualify. Push reaches nobody who deleted the app, so it works best soon after the subscription ends. ### In-app identity: sign-in and the RevenueCat app user ID Without sign-in, a subscription record is not tied to anyone you can contact. If you add sign-in, even an optional one, and set your own account ID as the RevenueCat app user ID, every subscription event from then on lines up with a person you can contact. This does not recover past anonymous subscribers. It makes sure the next one who leaves is reachable. ## Make the next leaver reachable - Create a win-back offer now and keep its URL. It works for people you cannot contact at all. - Apply for Retention Messaging so you get one message at the moment of cancel. - Add a billing problem banner with Apple's payment settings link. - Ask for push permission at a moment when it makes sense to the user, and save the device token against their account. - Add sign-in and set your account ID as the RevenueCat app user ID. - Consider a web checkout. RevenueCat Web with RevenueCat Billing, Stripe Billing or Paddle gives you a direct relationship with web buyers, and RevenueCat's web win-back beta can email them when they expire (RevenueCat docs). ## Is it worth the effort? People do come back. RevenueCat found 20% of monthly subscribers and 5% of annual subscribers reactivate within a year (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). The question is whether you can reach them, with the right offer, when they are ready. | | Plan | Reactivate within a year | Source, checked on | Monthly | 20% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2, 17 Oct 2026 | Annual | 5% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2, 17 Oct 2026 ## Where Winback fits Winback writes one personal message per lapsed subscriber, based on what they did, and adds your Apple offer URL only for people your rules cover. It needs a channel to send through: an email you collected, or text you paste into push. It cannot reach someone you have no contact for, and it does not connect to Apple. For those people, Apple's own offer surfaces are what is left. Winback reads RevenueCat events, see RevenueCat win-back. It is new and in early access, with no customer results yet. ## FAQ How do I message users who cancelled on the App Store if I never collected their email? Use the channels you or Apple control: push to people who allowed notifications, a message in the app when they open it, an Apple win-back offer shown on the App Store, in Settings and through its unique URL, and Retention Messaging at the moment of cancel. Add sign-in so the next leaver is reachable. Can I put an Apple win-back offer link in a push notification? Yes. Each win-back offer has a unique URL you can share in a push message, an email or a web page. The person still has to meet the eligibility rules you set, and needs iOS 18 or later. Does Retention Messaging reach people who already cancelled? No. It shows a message, imagery and an optional offer when a subscriber chooses to cancel. After that moment, you need a win-back offer or a channel of your own. Using the API also needs Apple's approval. What about subscribers whose payment failed? Apple retries billing for up to 60 days. If they open your app in that time, show a short banner with a link to https://apps.apple.com/account/billing so they can fix their card. That needs no email at all. Can Winback reach people I have no contact for? No. Winback writes one message per lapsed subscriber and adds your Apple offer URL where your rules cover them, but it needs a channel to send through. For people with no contact, Apple's own offer surfaces are what is left. Who is behind Winback? AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421) in Abuja, Nigeria. It charges 15% of the revenue from subscribers who come back after a Winback message, for 6 months from their return, and nothing after that. A return counts only when the person uses their unique return code, or the same customer id subscribes again within 60 days of the message. ## The price, in one table | | Item | Winback | Monthly fee | $0 | Setup fee | $0 | Share of revenue from returners | 15% | How long the share applies, per returner | 6 months | Attribution window after a message | 60 days | If nobody comes back | $0 Early access pricing, 17 Oct 2026. Billed by invoice. ## What counts as a return This is the part that makes pay-on-success fair or unfair, so here are the exact rules. - A message went out first. Winback only counts people it sent a message to. Someone who resubscribes before their message was sent is not counted. - Then one of two things happens: - The person uses their unique return code. Every message carries a code that belongs to that one person, so it cannot be shared to inflate the count. - Or the same customer id (RevenueCat app user id or Stripe customer id) subscribes again within 60 days of the message. This covers people who come back through the App Store without typing a code. - Each person counts once per return. Two messages to the same person do not create two returns. - Payments the store or Stripe recovered during retries never count. If Apple's billing retry or Stripe's Smart Retries fixed the payment, that was not us. You can check every return yourself. Step 2 of the planner takes a newer export from RevenueCat or Stripe, matches it against the people who were messaged, and shows who came back, the revenue and the 15% fee. It runs in your browser, so you do not have to trust our numbers. ## Worked example Illustration only. Winback is new and these are not real results. | | Illustration | Monthly plan | Annual plan | Subscribers messaged this month | 200 | 60 | Came back under the rules above | 20 | 3 | Price | $9.99 / month | $49.99 / year | Revenue in their first 6 months back | $1,198.80 | $149.97 | Winback fee at 15% | $179.82 | $22.50 | You keep | $1,018.98 | $127.47 Monthly: 20 people x $9.99 x 6 months = $1,198.80. Annual: one payment of $49.99 each falls inside the 6 months, so 3 x $49.99 = $149.97. The fee is 15% of revenue collected in the window. If a monthly returner leaves again after 2 months, the fee covers those 2 months only. If a refund is issued, that revenue is taken out. The return rates in the example are made up to keep the sums simple. For context, RevenueCat reports that within a year about 20% of monthly subscribers and 5% of annual subscribers reactivate on their own (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). Run your own numbers in the revenue calculator. ## Limits you set Pay-on-success only works if the tool cannot buy returns with your margin. So you set the limits, and Winback cannot go past them: - Largest discount. For example, never more than 30% off, or never a free month. - Offers per person. For example, one offer per person per year. - Wait between offers. So nobody learns to cancel for a deal. - Segments that get no offer. Billing-failed subscribers usually need a working card, not a discount. On the App Store, Apple's win-back offers have their own eligibility rules on paid duration, time since lapse and wait between redemptions (RevenueCat guide). Winback only includes your Apple offer link for people your rules cover. See Apple win-back offers. ## Is there churn software that only charges when it recovers revenue? Yes. Pricing models in this market vary a lot. Here is how others describe theirs: | | Tool | Pricing model | Source | FlyCode | Charges only on recovered revenue above a baseline; no seats, minimums or setup fee; 45-day money-back | flycode.com | Butter Payments | Pay on recovery, per FlyCode's comparison article (secondary) | flycode.com | WinbackFlow | Flat $99, $299 or $699 a month by MRR; "pay nothing until we deliver your first recovery" | winbackflow.co | Churn Solution | "Pay As We Save" share, or 0.03% to 0.1% of MRR | getapp.com | WinbackEngine | $1,000 pilot, then 20% of net recovered (secondary) | winbackengine.com | Churn Buster | Flat from $269 a month, no share of recovered revenue | churnbuster.io | Winback | 15% of returners' revenue for 6 months, no monthly fee | This page Checked 17 Oct 2026. Names are similar in this market: WinbackFlow, WinbackEngine and Winback Labs are separate companies with no link to Winback. Setup during early access is done with you by hand: we connect your RevenueCat or Stripe webhook together and you approve the first batch of messages. There is nothing to pay for that. Related: Winback vs Churnkey, Stripe churn recovery, RevenueCat win-back. ## FAQ Is the 15% taken from the price or from what Apple pays me? It is 15% of the revenue your RevenueCat or Stripe data records for that returner in the 6-month window. If you would rather settle on store proceeds after Apple or Google's commission, say so at setup and we agree it in writing before the first message. What if a subscriber comes back on their own? If they resubscribe before their message went out, it does not count. After a message, it counts only with their return code or the same customer id within 60 days. Some of those people might have come back anyway; the 60-day limit stops that overlap running on forever. How do you stop double counting? Each person counts once per return, however many messages they got. Recoveries made by Apple, Google or Stripe retries never count. Refunded payments are removed from the revenue. How do I pay? During early access we send an invoice each month for the fee on the previous month's returner revenue, with a list of every counted return so you can check it. Who is behind Winback? On this page - What percentage of churned users come back? - How big is involuntary churn? - Renewal rates by plan - Free trial cancellations - SaaS and payment recovery benchmarks - How we picked these numbers ## What percentage of churned app subscribers come back? RevenueCat's State of Subscription Apps 2026 covers 115,000+ apps and $16B+ in revenue (RevenueCat SOSA 2026). It measures reactivation: the share of churned subscribers who subscribe again within one year. | | Group | Reactivate within a year | Source | Monthly plans, SOSA 2026 | 20.1% | RevenueCat blog, 28 May 2026 | Monthly plans, SOSA 2025 | 13.7% | RevenueCat blog, 28 May 2026 | Annual plans | 5% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly, productivity apps | 36.1% | RevenueCat blog, 28 May 2026 | Monthly, health and fitness at mid-range prices | about 12% | RevenueCat blog, 28 May 2026 | Monthly, North America | 18.0% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly, Western Europe | 21.7% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly, Asia-Pacific | 23.9% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 Checked 17 Oct 2026. The SOSA report page rounds the monthly figure to 20%; the blog gives 20.1%. Two things to take from this. Annual subscribers who leave are mostly gone for good: 95% never return. And monthly reactivation rose from 13.7% to 20.1% in a year, so a fifth of the people you lost this month may pay you again with or without a campaign. Any tool that charges on returns should only count returns it can tie to a message. Our rules are on the pricing page. ## What is involuntary churn and how big is it? Involuntary churn is when a subscription ends because a payment failed, not because the person chose to leave. On app stores it is far bigger on Google Play than on the App Store. | | Measure | App Store | Google Play | Source | Share of cancellations that are billing failures (SOSA 2026 report) | 14% | 31% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 | Share of cancellations that are billing errors (RevenueCat blog) | 15.2% | 32.3% | RevenueCat blog, 2 Apr 2026 The two RevenueCat sources give slightly different figures. They were published at different times and may use different data cuts, so we show both with their own source. The same RevenueCat post says platform defaults alone recover roughly 10% to 15% of failed payments, that Apple's data indicates 90% of billing issues resolve within a 28-day grace period, and that Google reports grace periods give a 57% higher recovery rate (RevenueCat blog, 2 Apr 2026). Apple retries failed renewals for up to 60 days; grace periods can be 3 or 6 days for weekly plans and 3, 16 or 28 days for monthly and longer plans (Apple developer docs). ## What is a good renewal rate for a subscription app? | | Plan length | Renewal rate | Source | Yearly | 83.4% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly | 39.2% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Weekly | 18.7% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 Month 1 accounts for 35% of annual plan cancellations, and month 12 brings a 9% to 14% spike (RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2). Median trial-to-paid conversion is 42.5% for trials of 17 to 32 days, 37.4% for 5 to 9 days, and 25.5% for 4 days or less (RevenueCat SOSA 2026). Winback works on top of those same events: it writes each lost subscriber one personal message, attaches an offer only inside limits you set, works for App Store and Google Play users, and charges 15% of the revenue from people who come back, for 6 months. No monthly fee. On this page - What RevenueCat already gives you - Event by event: what Winback does - Why billing issues matter more on Google Play - How many come back on their own - Setup - FAQ ## What RevenueCat already gives you Be clear about this first, because you may not need us. RevenueCat is the subscription backend for a large share of indie apps. It says it powers 154,000+ apps (RevenueCat partner page). It sends webhooks for every subscription event, it has a Customer Center for in-app subscription management, and it now has web win-back campaigns. Those campaigns are useful, and they are free to try if you already use RevenueCat Web. Here is what the RevenueCat documentation says about them today (RevenueCat docs: win-back campaigns): | | RevenueCat web win-back (beta) | What the docs say | What it means for you | Trigger | EXPIRATION, not CANCELLATION | The email goes out when access ends, not the moment someone turns off auto-renew. | Channel | Email with a "Claim offer" button to a Web Purchase Link | The offer is bought on the web, not in the App Store. | Requirement | RevenueCat Web with RevenueCat Billing, Stripe Billing or Paddle | If you sell only through the App Store and Google Play, you need web billing first. | Content | No email customization, English only | Everyone gets the same message. | Targeting | No audience targeting, one app to one link | You cannot treat a 2-year annual subscriber differently from a 3-day trial. Source: revenuecat.com/docs/web/winback-campaigns, checked 17 Oct 2026. RevenueCat pricing: free up to $2,500 monthly tracked revenue, then 1% (revenuecat.com/pricing). If you already sell on the web through RevenueCat and a single English email is enough, start there. Winback is for the cases the beta does not cover: store-only apps, people you want to reach before access ends, messages that should differ person to person, and channels other than email. ## Event by event: what Winback does RevenueCat sends a webhook for each subscription change. Winback listens for the events that mean someone is leaving or has left, and for the events that show they came back. | | RevenueCat event | What happened | What Winback does | CANCELLATION | Auto-renew turned off. Access continues until the period ends. | Queues a personal message for the end of the period, using what the person did in your app. No offer unless your limits allow one. | EXPIRATION | Access ended. | Sends the message if it has not gone yet. For App Store users who meet your rules, includes your Apple win-back offer link. | BILLING_ISSUE | A renewal payment failed. The store keeps retrying. | Waits for the store's grace period, then sends a plain note with the store's payment settings link. No discount: these people did not choose to leave. | EXPIRATION with period type TRIAL | A free trial ended without a purchase. | Sends a short message about the one thing they tried, with an offer only if your trial rules allow it. | INITIAL_PURCHASE, RENEWAL, UNCANCELLATION | The person is paying again. | Checks the return code or customer id, stops further messages and counts the return. Event names from RevenueCat's webhook reference. Behaviour shown is what Winback does in early access, set up by hand with you. Every message is checked against your limits before it is written: the largest discount you allow, how many offers one person can get, and how long to wait between them. If a person falls outside the limits, they get a message with no offer, or no message at all. ## Why billing issues matter more on Google Play If you ship on both stores, do not treat billing failures as a rounding error. In RevenueCat's State of Subscription Apps 2026, 31% of Google Play cancellations were involuntary billing failures, against 14% on the App Store (RevenueCat SOSA 2026). A RevenueCat blog post from 2 April 2026 puts the split at 32.3% and 15.2%, and says platform defaults alone recover roughly 10% to 15% of failed payments (RevenueCat blog). Apple retries a failed renewal for up to 60 days, and you can switch on a grace period of 3, 16 or 28 days for monthly and longer plans (Apple developer docs). Turn that on before you buy anything. Winback only steps in after the store has had its chance. ## How many come back on their own Some people return without any message. That matters, because pay-on-success pricing is only fair if it counts returns you caused, not returns that would have happened anyway. Here are RevenueCat's published reactivation numbers: | | Plan or group | Reactivate within a year | Source | Monthly plans | 20.1% | RevenueCat blog, 28 May 2026 | Annual plans | 5% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly, productivity apps | 36.1% | RevenueCat blog | Monthly, health and fitness at mid-range prices | about 12% | RevenueCat blog | Monthly, North America | 18.0% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly, Western Europe | 21.7% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 | Monthly, Asia-Pacific | 23.9% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026 part 2 Checked 17 Oct 2026. This is why Winback only counts a return that follows a message: either the person uses their unique return code, or the same RevenueCat customer id subscribes again within 60 days of the message. The full rules are on the pricing page. ## Setup Winback is new. During early access we set it up with you by hand, on a call, and we run it on our own app first. There is no self-serve dashboard yet. - Try the planner first. Export customers from RevenueCat and drop the file into the planner. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing. You will see how many people sit in each segment and what each would be sent. - Add a webhook. In RevenueCat, add the webhook URL we give you. Winback reads the events in the table above and nothing else. - Map identity. RevenueCat knows an app user id. To send email you need an address. If you store email as a subscriber attribute, Winback uses it. If not, see the FAQ below. - Set your limits. Largest discount, offers per person, wait between offers, and which segments get an offer at all. - Approve the first batch. You read the first messages before anything goes out. Related: Apple win-back offers, winning back expired trials, all integrations. ## FAQ Does Winback conflict with RevenueCat's own win-back campaigns? It can if both email the same person. If you use RevenueCat's web campaigns, tell us and we exclude the people they cover, or switch them off for the segments Winback handles. You stay in control of which tool messages whom. What if I never collected email addresses? Then email is not your channel. Winback can still use push if the person allowed it, an in-app message when they reopen the app, and your Apple win-back offer link. Does Winback support Google Play subscribers? Yes, through RevenueCat. Play events arrive in the same webhook as App Store events. Billing issues are a bigger share of Play cancellations, so expect more billing-failed messages there. Does Winback write anything back to RevenueCat? No. It reads webhook events. It does not change subscriptions, grant access or create offers. Offers in the App Store or Play Console are created by you. Who is behind Winback? Winback is made by AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421), a small company in Abuja, Nigeria. We run it on our own subscription app, AGUNA, first. Winback is new and has no customer results to publish yet. ## See who you could win back this month Upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export to the planner. If this changes, we will update this page first. ## The planner runs in your browser The planner reads a RevenueCat customer export or a Stripe subscriptions export that you pick from your computer. It segments lost subscribers, applies your offer limits, writes one message per person and builds the CSV, all in the browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, so you can try it on real data without sending it to us. ## Early access: a webhook we set up with you During early access there is no self-serve connection. The founder connects your RevenueCat or Stripe webhook by hand with you, so you see exactly what is set up. The webhook sends read-only subscription events to Winback. Winback uses them to know who left and who came back, and to measure the 15% fee. Winback never changes a subscription and never charges your customers. When someone comes back, they pay through your own billing, the App Store, Google Play or Stripe, exactly as before. We use your subscribers' data only for your app's win-back messages, and delete it when you ask or 30 days after you stop, as set out in our privacy policy. How the fee works is on the pricing page. ## The website - winbackhq.com is hosted on Hostinger. - There are no analytics cookies and no third-party trackers. - The only resource loaded from another company is Google Fonts, so your browser requests the fonts from Google when a page opens. - The early access form stores your email and the fields you type on our server, and emails them to support@winbackhq.com, with a copy to our company inbox, support@aguna.app, so we can reply. ## What we do not claim Winback is new and in early access. It does not claim any security certification, and we have no customer results to show yet. If you have a security question, or think you have found a problem, email support@winbackhq.com. Winback is run by AGUNA Wellness Ltd, RC 9590421, Abuja, Nigeria. See also how Winback works with RevenueCat. ## FAQ Does Winback need write access to my RevenueCat or Stripe account? No. During early access we connect your RevenueCat or Stripe webhook by hand with you, and Winback receives read-only subscription events. It never changes a subscription or charges a customer. Your own billing stays in charge. Does the planner upload my export? No. The planner runs entirely in your browser. It reads your RevenueCat or Stripe export, writes the messages and builds the CSV there. Neither the export nor the CSV is sent to us. Does winbackhq.com use tracking cookies? No. The site has no analytics cookies and no third-party trackers. The only outside resource is Google Fonts, so your browser requests the fonts from Google when a page loads. Where is Winback hosted? The website is hosted on Hostinger. Early access form answers are stored on that server and emailed to support@winbackhq.com. Does Winback have a security certification? Winback does not claim any security certification. It is new and in early access. If you need answers for a security review, email support@winbackhq.com and the founder will reply. Contact support@winbackhq.com for any security or data question. ## Try it on your own data, safely The planner needs no account and your export stays in your browser. Upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export to see who you lost, who you could win back, and the message each person would get. Want us to set it up with you instead? Early access is open, and you pay nothing until someone comes back. Plan a win-back in your browser →Get early access --- # Stripe churn and failed payment recovery, pay on success URL: https://winbackhq.com/stripe-churn-recovery/ Updated: 2026-10-17 Winback / Integrations / Stripe Stripe integration # Stripe churn and failed payment recovery, pay on success Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 5 min read Stripe Billing already retries failed payments, emails customers and updates expired cards, and Stripe says businesses using it recover 55% of failed payments on average. Winback starts where that stops: after the retries run out, and for customers who cancelled on purpose, which Stripe does not chase. It sends each one a personal message, adds an offer only within your limits, and charges 15% of the revenue from customers who come back, for 6 months. ## What Stripe does for you already Before you add any tool, switch on what you already pay for. Stripe Billing includes Smart Retries (it picks retry times for failed renewals), failed payment emails, automatic card updates when a bank issues a new card number, and no-code automations for simple follow-ups. Stripe publishes these numbers about its own product: | | Number | Value | Source | Checked on | Average share of failed payments recovered by businesses using Stripe | 55% | stripe.com/billing (vendor) | 17 Oct 2026 | Failed payments recovered across Stripe in 2025 | $8.2B | stripe.com/billing (vendor) | 17 Oct 2026 | Recovered per $1 spent, 2025 | $14 | stripe.com/billing (vendor) | 17 Oct 2026 | Median attempted recovery rate, 119 US B2B SaaS customers, May 2026 | 12.7% | Baremetrics (vendor) | 17 Oct 2026 | Average involuntary churn, Recurly network, July 2026 | 1.25% | Recurly (vendor) | 17 Oct 2026 | Average voluntary churn, Recurly network, July 2026 | 2.34% | Recurly (vendor) | 17 Oct 2026 These are vendor numbers about each vendor's own customers. They measure different things, so do not add them together. Recurly also says nearly 1 in 4 new subscriptions comes from a previously cancelled customer (Recurly). Two points stand out. First, failed payments are a real but smaller share of churn: in Recurly's July 2026 data, voluntary churn (2.34%) is almost double involuntary churn (1.25%). Second, the people who cancelled on purpose are the ones nobody follows up with. Stripe's tools are built for payments that failed, not for a person who clicked cancel. ## Where Winback starts Winback does not replace Smart Retries. Keep them on. Winback picks up three groups: - Billing failed, retries finished. The subscription moved to cancelled or unpaid after Stripe's last attempt. Winback sends a plain note from you, with a link to update the card. No discount, because they did not choose to leave. - Cancelled on purpose. Winback writes a message that refers to what the customer actually used, and asks one question. It adds an offer only if your limits allow it for that person. - Trial ended without a card. A short note about the thing they tried, with a trial offer only if you allow one. See winning back expired trials. ## Stripe events Winback reads | | Stripe event | What it means | What Winback does | invoice.payment_failed | A renewal charge failed. Stripe will retry on your schedule. | Notes it and waits. Nothing is sent while Stripe is still retrying. | customer.subscription.updated | Status changed, for example to past due or unpaid, or cancel at period end was set. | Starts the clock for a cancelled or billing-failed message. | customer.subscription.deleted | The subscription ended, after a cancel, after failed retries, or after a trial with no payment method. | Sorts the person into a segment and writes their message. | invoice.paid | The customer paid. | If they had a message, checks the return code or customer id and counts the return. Event names from Stripe's API reference. How a trial ends without a card depends on your trial settings in Stripe. You create any coupon or promotion code yourself in Stripe. Winback does not create, change or cancel anything in your Stripe account. ## How the pricing works, with an example No monthly fee. 15% of the revenue from customers who come back, for 6 months from their return. A return counts when the customer uses their unique return code, or the same Stripe customer id subscribes again within 60 days of the message. | | Illustration | Value | Customers who come back after a message | 30 | Plan price | $20 / month | Months each one pays in the 6-month window | 6 | Revenue from returners | $3,600 | Winback fee at 15% | $540 | You keep | $3,060 Illustration only, not a result. If a returner cancels again after 2 months, the fee covers only those 2 months. Full rules on the pricing page. Try your own numbers in the revenue calculator. ## Is there churn software that only charges when it recovers revenue? Yes, a few, and the pricing basis matters more than the headline. Here is how the tools a Stripe founder usually compares are priced, as listed on their own sites: | | Tool | Pricing basis | Source | Churnkey | Flat. Starter $250/mo billed yearly or $300 monthly; Core from $500/$600 | churnkey.co | Churn Buster | Flat. Dunning or Cancel Flows from $269/mo, both $430/mo, no share of recovered revenue | churnbuster.io | FlyCode | Charges only on recovered revenue above a baseline, no seats or setup fee | flycode.com | Stripe native | Included with Stripe Billing | stripe.com/billing | Winback | No monthly fee. 15% of revenue from returners for 6 months | this site Prices checked 17 Oct 2026. A fuller comparison is on Winback vs Churnkey. Churnkey and Churn Buster are mature products with cancel flows that run inside your web app. Winback has no cancel flow. If most of your churn happens on a web cancel page and you have the volume to justify a flat fee, those tools may suit you better. ## Setup during early access - Export subscriptions from Stripe and drop the file into the planner. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing. - Add the webhook endpoint we give you, subscribed to the four events above. - Set your limits: largest discount, offers per person, wait between offers. - Read and approve the first batch of messages before anything is sent. ## FAQ Should I turn off Stripe Smart Retries if I use Winback? No. Keep Smart Retries, failed payment emails and card updates on. Winback waits until Stripe has finished retrying, so it does not compete with them or message someone whose card is about to work. Does Winback need write access to my Stripe account? No. It reads webhook events. It does not create coupons, change subscriptions or issue refunds. If an offer needs a coupon, you create it in Stripe. Do I pay a fee on customers Stripe recovers on its own? No. A return counts only if the customer uses their Winback return code, or the same Stripe customer id subscribes again within 60 days after a Winback message. Payments Stripe recovers during retries are never counted. Does it work with Stripe Billing for a mobile app's web checkout? Yes. If your app sells on the web through Stripe Billing, directly or through RevenueCat Web, Winback reads the same Stripe events. Who is behind Winback? AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421), a small company in Abuja, Nigeria. We run Winback on our own subscription app, AGUNA, first. Winback is new and has no customer results to publish yet. ## See who you could win back this month Upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export to the planner. URL: https://winbackhq.com/tools/win-back-revenue-calculator/ Updated: 2026-10-17 Winback / Tools / Revenue calculator Free tool # How much churned revenue could you win back? Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 3 min read Example: an app that loses 86 subscribers to cancels, 14 to failed payments and 150 expired trials in a month, at $9.99 a month, would win back about 26.1 subscribers if 20%, 10% and 5% return. That is $260.74 a month, or $1,564.43 over 6 months, of which Winback's 15% fee would be $234.67 and you would keep $1,329.76. Change the numbers below to match your app. Everything runs in your browser. ## Your numbers | | Lost this month | People | Expected return rate % | Cancelled | | | Billing failed | | | Trial expired | | Plan typeMonthlyAnnual Price per month ($) Months a returner pays, up to 6 ## What you would get back | Subscribers recovered | 26.1 | Monthly revenue recovered | $260.74 | Revenue over 6 months | $1,564.43 | Winback fee at 15% | $234.67 | You keep | $1,329.76 Figures shown before you change anything are the worked example above. For annual plans, one yearly payment falls inside the 6 months, so the months field is not used and monthly revenue is the yearly price divided by 12. ## Where the defaults come from | | Default | Value | Basis | Cancelled vs billing failed | 86 / 14 | Per 100 cancellations, 14% are billing failures on the App Store in RevenueCat SOSA 2026. On Google Play it is 31%, so use 69 / 31 for a Play-heavy app. | Trial expired | 150 | Assumption Pick your own from your RevenueCat or Stripe data. | Price | $9.99 | Assumption Use your real price. | Cancelled return rate | 20% | RevenueCat SOSA 2026: about 20% of churned monthly subscribers reactivate within a year (20.1% per RevenueCat's blog). Annual: 5%. This includes people who return with no campaign, so treat it as a reference, not a forecast. | Billing failed return rate | 10% | Assumption Set near the 10% to 15% that platform defaults recover, per RevenueCat. Winback only messages after retries end, so your rate may be lower. | Trial expired return rate | 5% | Assumption We found no verified published benchmark for winning back expired trials. | Months a returner pays | 6 | Upper bound Assumes nobody leaves again within 6 months. Monthly plans renew at 39.2% in RevenueCat SOSA 2026, so lower this to be cautious. | Fee | 15% | Winback's price: 15% of returners' revenue for 6 months, no monthly fee. Pricing. Sources checked 17 Oct 2026. ## How the calculator works - For each segment, people lost times the return rate gives the people recovered. The three are added up. - Monthly revenue recovered is people recovered times the monthly price (or yearly price divided by 12). - Revenue over 6 months is monthly revenue times the months a returner pays, up to 6. For annual plans, it is one yearly payment each. - The fee is 15% of that. You keep the rest. It covers one month of lost subscribers. Run it again for each month. It does not include store commission; if you sell through the App Store or Google Play, your proceeds are lower than the price. Want the real list instead of an estimate? The planner reads your RevenueCat or Stripe export and counts each segment for you. Related: churn statistics 2026, expired trials, RevenueCat win-back. ## FAQ How do I estimate how many churned subscribers I can win back? Multiply the people you lost in each segment by a return rate, then by your price. RevenueCat's 2026 data shows about 20% of churned monthly subscribers and 5% of annual subscribers reactivate within a year, with or without a campaign. Why does the calculator stop at 6 months? Winback charges 15% of a returner's revenue for 6 months from their return, then nothing. The calculator shows that window so you can see the fee and what you keep. Are these numbers a promise? No. Winback is new and has no customer results yet. The defaults are published benchmarks or labelled assumptions. Use your own numbers, and use the planner to count your real segments. Does the calculator send my numbers anywhere? No. It runs entirely in your browser and makes no network requests. Who made this calculator? The Winback team at AGUNA Wellness Ltd (RC 9590421), Abuja, Nigeria. We run Winback on our own app, AGUNA, first. ## See who you could win back this month Upload a RevenueCat or Stripe export to the planner.
